Getting started

How do I analyze a spot?

Open the map and choose a location. On a phone, press and hold for a moment until the ring fills; on a computer, click the point. WindCaster reads the models for that spot and returns a plain-English risk assessment, with the key reasons first. You can also just ask in your own words, e.g. “Is Saturday morning good to fish the inlet?”

How do I save a spot and get alerts?

Create a free account, then save your favorite launches, trailheads, or fishing grounds. WindCaster’s Spot Monitor keeps watch and notifies you by email, or web push where enabled, when a qualifying window opens. Your alert limits only ever tighten the assessment; a custom threshold can make an alert stricter, never clear a hazard.

Where do the forecasts come from?

Every assessment is cross-checked against many leading global models, and verified against live buoy observations and official NWS marine alerts. The map also offers radar, satellite, lightning, tides, and more. See the full data sources and attribution.

Is this a substitute for the official forecast?

No. WindCaster is a planning aid for situational awareness, not a replacement for official guidance. Always check the official NWS marine forecast and local notices before you go. The captain is responsible for the final decision.

Features

  • Weather Profile. Set your activities, vessel, and comfort limits; the assessment tightens to match. Personalization can make WindCaster more cautious, never less.
  • Route & trip analysis. Draw a path and WindCaster returns a risk read for each leg plus a best-departure scan across the coming days. It is decision support, not turn-by-turn navigation or route optimization.
  • Layers. Wind, gust, waves, period, temperature, rain, cloud, pressure, sea temperature, currents, radar, satellite, terrain, tropical, and tides, plus alert, lightning, buoy, and storm-track overlays.
  • Alerts. Email and web push today; iOS push when the app ships.

Accounts & data

You sign in with your email and a short verification code; a password is optional. To delete your account and all associated data, open the account panel and choose “Delete account,” or email us and we’ll remove it for you. Deletion permanently removes your email, saved spots, push subscriptions, and sessions. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Access

WindCaster is currently in private preview, available by invitation. If you have an access code, enter it when prompted. To request access, use the contact form.

Reporting an incorrect forecast

Forecasts are uncertain and observation coverage varies by region, so occasionally a reading will look off. If a reading or value seems wrong, tell us the spot, the time, and what you observed via the contact form. These reports feed directly into our verification work.

Troubleshooting

  • Map won’t load or looks blank. Refresh the page; if you’re offline or on a weak connection, reconnect and try again. Check system status.
  • Not receiving alert emails. Check spam, confirm the spot’s alerts are enabled, and make sure you haven’t unsubscribed. Add support@windcaster.ai to your contacts.
  • Location isn’t detected. Allow location permission when prompted; WindCaster only uses it while the app is open. You can always search or tap a point instead.

Known limitations

  • Forecasts are inherently uncertain and conditions can change faster than any model.
  • Observation coverage (buoys, radar) varies by region.
  • WindCaster is not for navigation, commercial operations, or emergencies.
